Record Keeping

  • The NestWatch program from Cornell is a citizen science project that engages volunteers in collecting data on nesting birds across North America. Participants monitor nesting sites and record information about the timing, location, and outcome of breeding attempts. The data collected by volunteers is used to study the biology and conservation of birds, and to provide information for management and conservation decisions.

Joining NestWatch is a simple and accessible way to contribute to bird conservation efforts, and virtually anyone can participate. Following the directions on the NestWatch website, you can become a certified NestWatcher and start observing bird nests.

It is recommended that children be accompanied by an adult during observation.

As you visit your nest you can record your observations, and report them on our website or through the NestWatch Mobile App for iOS and Android.

By contributing your observations, you become a part of a large database used by researchers to study birds and understand their behavior. Your participation is crucial for accurate monitoring of nesting birds across the country. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to learn about birds and form a lasting connection with nature while providing valuable information to science.
